Check &\u00a0Connect\u00a0is an\u00a0initiative\u00a0developed\u00a0by\u00a0the University of Minnesota\u00a0that helps keep students on track towards graduation. The two days of training\u00a0were\u00a0offered to both\u00a0ACCESS\u00a0teachers and professionals.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

After\u00a0attending\u00a0the training session, teams of\u00a0ACCESS\u00a0resource teachers, professionals, and administrators developed\u00a0their own\u00a0tutoring\u00a0program\u00a0(inspired by\u00a0University of Minnesota\u2019s\u00a0Check\u00a0&\u00a0Connect)\u00a0that was\u00a0tailored to the\u00a0context\u00a0of each ACCESS\u00a0AGE and VT\u00a0center<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space][vc_text_separator title=\u00a0\u00bbACCESS WEST\u00a0\u00bb title_color=\u00a0\u00bb#1e73be\u00a0\u00bb][vc_empty_space][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row row_type=\u00a0\u00bbrow\u00a0\u00bb use_row_as_full_screen_section=\u00a0\u00bbno\u00a0\u00bb type=\u00a0\u00bbfull_width\u00a0\u00bb text_align=\u00a0\u00bbleft\u00a0\u00bb background_animation=\u00a0\u00bbnone\u00a0\u00bb css_animation=\u00a0\u00bb\u00a0\u00bb][vc_column width=\u00a0\u00bb2\/3″][vc_column_text]Here is\u00a0an overview of\u00a0the\u00a0tutoring approach that is\u00a0now\u00a0used\u00a0with\u00a0adult\u00a0students\u00a0at ACCESS\u00a0West:<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

At ACCESS\u00a0West,\u00a0there is continuous enrollment of new adult students each month in the Bricklaying and Masonry\u00a0program.\u00a0Adult students\u00a0learn at their own pace\u00a0in\u00a0an individualized setting.\u00a0While some adult students flourish\u00a0in this model, other\u00a0adult\u00a0students\u00a0encounter\u00a0personal\u00a0challenges\u00a0(lateness, absenteeism, drug addiction, etc.)\u00a0which hinder\u00a0teacher\u00a0follow-up and\u00a0make it\u00a0more difficult for\u00a0these adult\u00a0students\u00a0to achieve success.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

To better support\u00a0adult\u00a0students in\u00a0both\u00a0their\u00a0personal and professional\u00a0goals, the\u00a0ACCESS\u00a0center teams\u00a0set up\u00a0a\u00a0tutoring program to target academic goals while simultaneously\u00a0supporting\u00a0other,\u00a0non-academic\u00a0areas of\u00a0the\u00a0adult life.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In the tutoring program, weekly\u00a0reoccurring\u00a0meetings\u00a0are setup\u00a0for\u00a0adult\u00a0students. These\u00a0weekly\u00a0meetings help\u00a0adult\u00a0students\u00a0track\u00a0information\u00a0that\u00a0lead\u00a0to success\u00a0such as\u00a0hours\u00a0spent\u00a0in class,\u00a0absences,\u00a0a calendar of\u00a0upcoming\u00a0modules, evaluations,\u00a0and so on.\u00a0<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space height=\u00a0\u00bb36px\u00a0\u00bb][\/vc_column][vc_column width=\u00a0\u00bb1\/3″][vc_empty_space][vc_single_image image=\u00a0\u00bb5620″ img_size=\u00a0\u00bbfull\u00a0\u00bb add_caption=\u00a0\u00bbyes\u00a0\u00bb qode_css_animation=\u00a0\u00bb\u00a0\u00bb][vc_empty_space][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row row_type=\u00a0\u00bbrow\u00a0\u00bb use_row_as_full_screen_section=\u00a0\u00bbno\u00a0\u00bb type=\u00a0\u00bbfull_width\u00a0\u00bb text_align=\u00a0\u00bbleft\u00a0\u00bb background_animation=\u00a0\u00bbnone\u00a0\u00bb css_animation=\u00a0\u00bb\u00a0\u00bb][vc_column][vc_column_text]Weekly\u00a0meetings\u00a0also encourage\u00a0ongoing\u00a0discussions\u00a0between the teacher and\u00a0the\u00a0adult student, which helps\u00a0strengthen\u00a0the bond\u00a0between\u00a0the two.\u00a0The\u00a0teacher\u00a0will not only\u00a0work\u00a0with the\u00a0adult\u00a0student to develop\u00a0motivational\u00a0strategies\u00a0but\u00a0will\u00a0also\u00a0intervene\u00a0with\u00a0academic and personal\u00a0difficulties,\u00a0when\u00a0they arise.\u00a0The\u00a0ultimate\u00a0goal of the tutoring program\u00a0(link\u00a0required)\u00a0is to\u00a0help\u00a0adult\u00a0students\u00a0succeed by\u00a0taking\u00a0responsibility\u00a0for their own learning\u00a0and eventually becoming an independent learner.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In addition to\u00a0helping\u00a0adult\u00a0students visualize their progress\u00a0and better manage their personal lives outside of school,\u00a0these one-on-one\u00a0meetings help\u00a0facilitate referrals for\u00a0additional\u00a0support. Additional support can be\u00a0accessed\u00a0from\u00a0within the\u00a0ACCESS center or\u00a0linked\u00a0directly\u00a0to\u00a0external community organizations when necessary. Tutoring also allows teachers to play a\u00a0more\u00a0important and\u00a0direct\u00a0role in the success of each\u00a0adult student.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Often, adults just need to talk, to be listened to and above all, to be heard.\u00a0The variety of needs\u00a0at ACCESS\u00a0are\u00a0as wide as the different eye colors of the\u00a0adult\u00a0students! One thing\u00a0is for\u00a0certain, the tutoring program at ACCESS is a win for the teachers, professionals and adult\u00a0students.\u00a0The tutoring program enables a better understanding of the needs of\u00a0ACCESS\u00a0clientele and bridges the gap between the challenges faced by\u00a0the\u00a0adult\u00a0learners\u00a0and the demands of education and the labor market.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Over time,\u00a0the\u00a0documents and tools developed\u00a0are\u00a0adjusted by the\u00a0ACCESS\u00a0center team\u00a0on an annual basis. There is no doubt that the time taken to support\u00a0the\u00a0adult\u00a0learners\u00a0individually makes a real difference for students, especially the most vulnerable\u00a0ones.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
